United Auto Workers Hires Merit Shops

With Union Bids 'Too High,' UAW Turns to Open Shop Contractors

When the United Auto Workers needed to build a lakefront home for its retired president, it turned to merit shop contractors, reports the Detroit News.  A UAW spokesman said bids solicited from union contractors were unreasonable.

"None of those bids - all of which were from union contractors -- were accepted as the UAW believed those bids were too high for the cabin construction," the spokesman was quoted as saying.

All this is unfolding as the FBI is investigating whether the Auto Workers Union misspent member money on personal luxuries.
